International Conference / 12-13 June 2017 Cologne, Germany

In Germany like all over Europe still today many archaeological sites remain burried and unaccounted for in spite of centuries of excavations and chance findings. Researchers and archaeologists use different methods of archaeological prospection to detect and evaluate these unknown sites, to understand and describe the development of pre-historic landscapes and to protect our archaeological heritage.

The conference aims to bring together archaeologist from all over Europe to exchange and share their experiences and research results on all aspects of archaeological field walking, especially in combination with other survey techniques. It will also provide a premier platform for researchers, practitioners and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the fields of archaeological prospection.

Questions concerning charting surface finds, using statistical analysis of distribution patterns and cross-referencing with results from other prospection methods and trial trenching to obtain a highly detailed insight into hidden remains of archaeological sites should be discussed during the conference.

The “Finds in the landscape”-conference will be organized by the LVR-Amt für Bodendenkmalpflege im Rheinland. It is the state service for archaeological heritage in the Lower Rhineland (Germany), which is using a wide range of different methods of archaeological prospection from field walking and geophysical surveys to air photos and LIDAR data.

The conference will be held on 12-13 June 2017 at the Fritz-Thyssen-Stiftung in Cologne (Apostelnkloster 13-15, 50672 Köln, Germany).
